Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.
It is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically the individual muscle fibres. Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.
It is beneficial for many physical problems, including sports injuries and chronic pain.
How does it work?
When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, our expert will often use direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles. Specific hand positions and strokes are used to respond to various tissues while specific movement techniques are employed to release muscular congestion. It helps to loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. It is both corrective and therapeutic. People often notice improved range of motion immediately after a deep tissue massage.
Sports massage is a technique particularly effective in patients with muscle overuse issues or for sportspeople before or after a big game or run. It improves muscle suppleness and mobility of joints. Sports massage can be used for many different reasons but mainly in treatment of Sport Injuries and for sports preparation and recovery. Sports massage is designed to prevent and relieve injuries and conditions that are associated with exercise. It can often be quite strenuous and is meant to relieve and reduce the stress and tension that can build up within the body’s soft tissues while exercising. It uses techniques that are designed to increase endurance and performance, to minimize the chances of injury and, if there is an injury, to reduce the recovery time.
